Queen of the Black Coast 2

  1. QUEEN OF THE BLACK COAST 2 - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears as Plate 2 in my art folio that is based on the story, "QUEEN OF THE BLACK COAST," by Robert E. Howard.

As an illustrator I also pretended to be a movie director when designing a particular scene to draw (shoot). For this picture I decided to place Conan at the back of the ship, put Belit up on the Poop deck covered with animal furs, and place my camera angle (your viewing angle) so that both Conan and you would be looking up at Belit as she does her dance.

Learning about "composition," increased my appreciation of what movie directors do. When I watch a movie now, not only am I following the storyline, the actors, and any special effects going on, I am also aware of the director's placement of the camera, his viewing angle and scene compositions. I doubt if most movie goers are aware of, or appreciate the director's input, which is a subtle part of the film and a very important part of the viewing experience.
